Virgin Media’s VIVID House Party is one of the first online advertising campaigns to use Virtual Reality to tell a brand story. The film places the viewer in the middle of a large house party where partygoers can be seen making the most of Virgin’s superfast 200Mbs VIVID broadband. Using VR headsets, the user can immerse themselves in the party and move through the crowd with the freedom to explore the whole room.
In a UK first, the production used the ‘Jaunt One’ – a pioneering 24 lens, 360° virtual reality camera was attached to a remote controlled, robotic buggy which moved through the room capturing the action in a single, continuous two-and-a-half minute shot. With a large crew and over 100 cast members the ambitious ‘one take’ film needed to overcome several technical and staging challenges in order to create a seamless VR experience without the unnatural distraction of cuts. To enhance the realism, a 360° ambisonic audio mix was created to ensure the sound reacted realistically to the viewer’s movements.
Viewers can experience the Vivid Party on two platforms: a 2D 360° video on YouTube via their tablet or smart phone, (Google Chrome only) or for the full, Stereoscopic VR experience they can access the film via the dedicated Jaunt Smartphone app for use with Samsung Gear or Google Cardboard.
